The Other Sister - A story of a girl with weak eyes

I wrote about Esther couple days ago. Now I want to write about another woman in the Bible. Her story often remains unnoticed. She is often considered as "the other sister", the second best.

The two sisters

A man has two daughters. The other one is breathtakingly beautiful. The other one is... well... nothing special. Her eyes are described weak. Some say it means, that she had tender eyes or blue eyes. I imagine the weak eyed girl lived in her sister's shadow.

A Man named Jacob

One day a man, Jacob, saw a woman of his dreams. If Jacob lived today it might have been something like this:

Jacob sees a drop-dead gorgeous girl driving a Ferrari. He falls in love immediately.

In the Bible, this beautiful girl, Rachel, arrived with sheep (a sign of wealth). So, it was love at first sight when Jacob saw this gorgeous rich girl.

A Cunning father-in-law

Laban (the father-in-law) saw how infatuated Jacob was. He decided to take advantage of it; Laban promised him Rachel if he'd work 7 years for him.

Jacob worked 7 years to get Rachel, his dream. On their wedding night the father-in-law switched Rachel to Leah. Jacob realized that in the morning.

Leah

I can't imagine what Leah felt. Se was nothing but an object to her father. she was a disappointment to her new husband. She wasn't enough; Jacob married Rachel too. She was just the other wife. Rachel was the love of his live.

Hard to imagine

For us, the modern people, it is hard to understand this story. There are so many things that are so wrong in our cultures. Being married to two women, having slaves, women being nothing but men's property...

But what some of us can understand is being the second best. Being in someone's shadow and not being good enough. Sometimes we're not good enough for ourselves.

I don't know why, but this song (I Can't Make You Love Me) comes to my mind when I think about Leah.

I want to dedicate this post to my big sis. She has always been my role model. And she will always be my amazing big sis!

We are nothing like Leah and Rachel.
